DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the European Space Weather Week conference
2026\, E-SWAN EOCOM is organising a space weather training course in Fire
nze\, Italy from Thursday 29 Oct to Sunday 1 Nov 2026. Venue The venue i
s different from the one of ESWW2026. The school will be given in in the G
alileo Galilei Institute premises\, within the scientific pole of the hist
orical astronomical observatory at Arcetri (please visit the webpage https
://www.ggi.infn.it for useful information and details). Arcetri is a perip
heral area very close to Florence (about 45-minute walk from the city cent
 re and\, therefore\, from the ESWW2026 conference centre).Program Sporadi
c and massive eruptions of highly energetic matter and radiation from the
Sun can trigger Space Weather processes in the near-Earth environment. Tec
hnological infrastructures on and around our planet are prone to Space Wea
ther: satellite navigation and radio wave propagation can be impacted\, as
well as large energy transport systems like electrical power grids. Human
health is also endangered by Space Weather: harmful radiation at flight a
ltitude can increase when a solar particle storm hits the Earth’s enviro
nment\, exposing crews and passengers to increased particle radiation.Impa
cted stakeholders want to learn about those natural hazards. The need for
Space Weather knowledge is increasing fast as more nations\, companies and
industries want to increase their awareness and resilience\, in order to
bridge with the community and learn how products made available by its mem
bers can be exploited. The training course covers the basics of Space Weath
 er\, data\, models\, indices\, alerts\, forecasts and products. A detailed
programme will be made available at a later stage and will also include a
visit to a relevant research center. LecturersThis space weather trainin
g course will be taught by trained lecturers from the Solar-Terrestrial Ce
ntre of Excellence and the Community Coordinated Modeling Center. All teac
hers are experienced in teaching space weather course and deeply involved
in space weather services\, modeling and research. Eligibility and Applic
ationThe training course is suitable for undergraduate\, master and PhD st
udents and early career professionals in the space weather domain. We also
  welcome applications from teachers\, journalists\, managers\, companies o
r similar that want to learn about space weather and its impacts. Particip
ation to the training course comes with the condition to also register for
the ESWW2026 conference the week after. Applications will close on 15 Ma
y 2026. To apply please\, use the registration link below. You will be ask
ed why you would like to participate in the training course\, what your re
levant experience is and how the training course can help you in your care
er. After the deadline\, all applications will be reviewed by the organiz
ers by 29 May 2026\, taking DE&I considerations into account. All applica
nts will be informed of the outcome of the selection. Selected students mu
st provide proof of registration for ESWW2026 by 20 June 2026 to finalise
their enrolment. If this proof is not received by the deadline\, the place
at the school will be offered to the next applicant on the waiting list.R
egistration and FeeParticipation to the course is free. E-SWAN covers tuit
ion\, accommodation (if needed)\, and some meals. Students will be select
ed and ranked according to their motivation and CV.AccomodationPossibility
for shared accomodation for 3 nights from October 29th to November 1st\,
2026 at the Hotel Villa Carlotta (https://www.hotelvillacarlotta.it)Please
note that the Hotel Villa Carlotta will close on 1 November for renovatio
n work. The school participant will need to book alternative accommodation
for the remainder of their stay.              .
