Description

For Whom

For former participants of the Space Weather Introductory Course (SWIC) or the advanced course on ionospheric weather.

Background

During the SWIC, trainees get the basics of Space Weather for operators, know about the potential impact on military and civilian technology and understand the Space Weather products provided by the STCE, the Belgian Space Weather Centre.

They are able to read and understand an Ursigram, interpret space weather warnings, e.g. presto, CACTus Halo CME alert, flaremail, etc and have a notion of the PECASUS advisories for civil aviation. They understand which space weather phenomena trigger ionospheric processes inducing

  • scintillation of GNSS signals,
  • delay of GNSS signals because of increased VTEC,
  • a post-storm depression followed by a reduction of the Maximal Usable Frequency in the HF wave band,
  • HF radio wave absorption.

In a next step, during a Post-SWIC, the translation of the SWIC content to products and services for the end-user of the participating organisations should be made.

In this respect, the Joint Meteorological Group of the Netherlands offers  a Post-SWIC open for all registered participants of the SWIC.

The lectures will be given by Maj. drs. Willem-Pieter van der Laan, head of MTO/SME Space Weather and Dr. Michaela Brchnelová.

Format

The course will be organised in a hybride way: both onsite and online.
