This seminar is part of the Climate Cookies & Coffee series of the Belgian Climate Centre. This is a new seminar series launched by the Belgian Climate Centre to foster knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and interdisciplinary discussion among climate researchers.

For the second edition, the Belgian Climate Centre will welcome Joppe Massant (University of Gent) who will talk on: 'The missing piece in the climate puzzle - Using AI and satellites to gain real-time 3D cloud profiles'.

Clouds are the biggest source of uncertainty within climate models. That is why ESA is researching approaches to gain real-time 3D cloud information for climate models. As a potential approach, our team researched a way to do this using AI. In our research, we combined 2D satellite imagery (from satellites such as MSG / SEVIRI) and combined this with data from cloud satellites (such as CloudSAT). We then trained an AI model to predict the cloud profile from the satellite image. This approach would allow global coverage of 3D cloud maps if extended to and validated on other satellites across the globe. The presentation can be around 15 minutes + questions (I can easily adapt in case a shorter or longer session is desired).
