Scientific knowledge is central to shaping society’s understanding of climate risks and possible responses, yet many scientists still grapple with how—or whether—to engage publicly. For decades, academia promoted the image of the “pure scientist,” detached from policy, media, or activism, but that model is increasingly under pressure.

Against this backdrop, the Science4Climate Action seminar invites Belgian scientists to reflect on their role in society through a structured conversation, offering theoretical insights, empirical research, and lived experiences from peers who have chosen different paths—whether as public communicators, policy advisors, engaged citizens, or those who remain within academia.

By fostering open, evidence-based, and inclusive dialogue, the seminar seeks to raise awareness of the options, challenges, and opportunities for scientists taking an active role in society in Belgium and beyond.
