The workshop aims to bring together the satellite community, validation data providers and stakeholders from around the world to:

  • Receive an update on EUMETSAT’s and CNES’ initial plans for the CO2M mission and MicroCarb product validation and monitoring;
     
  • Receive an update on results (and tools) from the dedicated CO2M science study supporting this initiative, focussing on ground based network analysis statistics derived to date;
     
  • Discuss the application/usefulness of such analysis for related satellite missions and studies;
     
  • Discuss current and future ground based network design issues (e.g., improving coverage, defining requirements for products from such measurement networks, etc.).

Key themes arising from the discussion will help inform priorities for the next stage of CO2M and MicroCarb Cal/Val planning, in collaboration with related missions and initiatives.

EUMETSAT’s science support study provides input into the validation and monitoring concept for CO2M. This includes analysis of the availability of complementary parameters, which influence the target measurand. Tools developed by this study can provide an overview of the available measurements with respect to the location of emission hot-spots. They can also illustrate the effect of adding additional measurements at certain locations considering the criticality of emission, co-emitted species and pollution levels, and assist in identifying locations to fill observational gaps in current measurements networks. Overpass statistics at the stations, based on the footprint information at these stations with the decomposition of the measured columns in terms of actual emission area, are also provided, and put into the context of the simulated CO2M orbits. 

The MAGIC – Monitoring Atmospheric composition and Greenhouse gases through multi-Instrument Campaigns (https://magic.aeris-data.fr) initiative is the CNES’s science support study for validation of greenhouse gas products from satellite missions like Microcarb, but also IASI, Merlin, GOSAT, OCO2 and possibly CO2M.  The workshop will discuss the evolution of the MAGIC project for the coming years in the view of the forthcoming MicroCarb and CO2M launches.

The workshop invites interested participants working on satellite missions and their ground-based validation with similar objectives and/or type of instrumentation to CO2M and MicroCarb. The workshop will be hosted by EUMETSAT and CNES with support from the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB).

The event will take place on 7 July 2023 from 10:00 - 16:00 CET in the Salle de l’Espace meeting room at CNES headquarters2 Place Maurice Quentin, 75039 Paris Cedex 01, France, following the IWGGMS-19 workshop taking place from 4th to 6th of July in Paris. Remote participation is also possible for those who are unable to join physically. Please indicate your choice accordingly in the registration form.

Registration is open from 24th of April to 26th of June for physical participation and to the 6th of July for virtual participation. There are a few slots available for presentations by participants who want to introduce work on validation of satellite products from CO2M and MicroCarb-type missions using ground-based network data and being highly relevant with respect to the scope of the workshop.
