Description

SAWS-ASPECS is a comprehensive toolset developed to support current and future space exploration missions through detailed modeling, monitoring, and forecasting of radiation environments. SAWS-ASPECS leverages real-time space weather inputs to characterize both average and extreme particle flux conditions, with particular relevance to high-impact events such as Ground Level Enhancements (GLEs), since it provides predictions from E>10 to E>300 MeV. The GLEs of 2024, which demonstrated the continued threat posed by solar energetic particle events to mission safety, are used as benchmark cases to validate SAWS-ASPECS forecasting capabilities. SAWS-ASPECS also supports operational decision-making by issuing radiation alerts prior to launch and throughout mission operations.
