Description
Space It Up! (SIU) is a major research and innovation program funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. It brings together a consortium of 33 Italian entities from both the research and industry operating in the space sector. SIU aims at fostering innovation and technological development in space exploration. The project is structured into thematic "spokes", each addressing a strategic area for the future of the space sector.
Within Spoke 6, "Protection of Critical Infrastructures and Space Weather", Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) leads three key tasks that aim at developing advanced approaches for geohazard assessment. This is achieved through the integration of multi-source data from satellites and ground-based networks, and numerical models. The specific activities led by INGV include: 1) the study of solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes to better understand the dynamics of energy transfer in geospace; 2) the investigation of the thermosphere-ionosphere response to geomagnetic disturbances, focusing on characterizing variability and improving the prediction of extreme space weather events; 3) the assessment of the impact of space weather on both near-Earth and infrastructures at ground, contributing to risk mitigation strategies and to the development of services for technological and societal resilience. We briefly describe the present contribution of INGV to SIU Spoke 6, also providing a view of future developments.
