Description

On 28 April 2025 at 12:33 CEST occurred a major power outage in Spain and Portugal. Spain's electrical grid was down for almost 23 hours before the systems were back up. Outage affected traffic light, streetlamps, phone network, domestic and international transport, etc. Next day, information about space weather was requested by ESA and by the Spanish Space Agency to the Space Weather Group at the University of Alcala searching for (or trying to discard) solar activity as a possible cause of the blackout and graphs demonstrating the conclusion. Our report was very clear: “Definitively, the outage is not related to the Sun”. However, a misinterpretation of one of our figures may guide to consider GICs as the possible source of the blackout. This presentation describes the lessons learned from this event, including the relevance of scientific expertise, robust products, resilient infrastructure and clear communication channels.
