Description
Space weather poses a risks to power grids by inducing electric fields in the ground and currents in transmission lines. Monitoring these effects is therefore crucial for power grid operators, enabling them to diagnose problems and, when necessary, take measures to protect the grid. Previous work has modeled the induced ground electric field and currents through the Swedish power grid for historical events using a three-dimensional ground conductivity model. In this work, we adapt the model for operational use and real-time modeling in Sweden. We present the efforts to establish a magnetic field base line using only historical data and filtering data to obtain real-time electric fields and currents. We also present a discussion of available magnetometer networks and on data products and visualization for the end user and operational use.
